If there was one pair of boots I recommend owning this Winter? It’s a pair of BLACK boots. Tan, beige and chocolate boots can be great neutrals… but can also look more casual and harder to style with dark colours.

Black is by far the hardest working colour in every wardrobe, from clothing to shoes to accessories. It’s also the only colour you can wear an outfit top-to-toe and look so chic and stylish!
Scroll down for my detailed tips on black boots - how versatile they are, ways to style, where to shop, and my top picks for this season!
Wardrobe Tips:
Versatile: Black boots can be styled SO many ways - from casual, to work style, to evening style. They are shoes that can take you from day to night!
Practical: Boots keep your feet dry… and warm! They can be an investment piece but they can also last for a few seasons if looked after and stored well. Tap here to watch my quick tip to help for maintaining longevity in boots »
Timeless: Black boots never go out of fashion. They are classic, sophisticated, and versatile - making them a staple that can be worn year after year!
Shopping Tips:
Fabrication: leather is known to last longer and have a little stretch, but PU can be just as good - and half the price!
Heel Height: consider a low heel to mid heel, as you’ll then wear it the most! A stacked (heavy) heel will give you more stability and a kitten heel is also practical for every day style. My hot tip is to not go above an 8cm heel, as it then becomes harder to wear and less versatile.
Two Key Styles:
There are two types of black boots I would consider:
Ankle Boots » Have been hot for a few seasons, from low cut (on the ankle) to shin length (think combat boot). My hot tip is to go somewhere in between for the perfect boot - I would recommend a slightly higher style (above the ankle), with a low to mid heel. See images below and Tap to Shop »
Knee High Boots » Are back! A few years ago we may have considered these for the ‘younger generation’ or to be a bit ‘sexy’, but knee high boots are back - and they are classy, stylish and so versatile! Look for a kitten to mid heel style to dress up, or opt for a low or cowboy style heel, for fab cool casual! Tap to Shop »
Styling Tips:
Casual Style: With jeans, a cosy knit, and add a coat.
Work Style: With a midi skirt or trousers, shirt or blouse, and add a blazer
Evening Style: Long sleeve dress, add tights for warmth, and fab jacket.
MY Top Picks:
Ankle Boot with a mid heel, pointed toe and soooo stylish.. Tap to Shop »
For an Ankle Boot that offers EXTRA comfort, support, has a block heel you can stand all day - and goes up to size 43 (size 13)… Tap to Shop »
If I was going to add a new Knee High Boot to my wardrobe, this would be my HOT pick. It’s got the perfect heel height, pointed toe, and fits beautifully! Tap to Shop »

Hi Penelope, what boot would you recommend that has a flatter heel. I’m 62 and can’t cope with a heel any more but am still after something stylish.
